Phonics

Within our schools, we use the Twinkl Phonics programme for the teaching of phonics and early reading. This ensures that children are ready to begin the more formal aspect of phonics teaching at the beginning of the Reception year.

It is our aim that, by the end of the reception year, children are able to read and write short sentences using their phonic knowledge.

We ensure that children are exposed to high quality literature through the use of our daily storytimes, English circle times and exposure to a diverse range of texts. This allows us to develop the children's love of reading as well as supporting vocabulary development.

Alongside their phonics journey, we focus on attention, listening and speaking skills. This means we focus on building the foundations for phonics skills by developing children’s ability to hear and discriminate sounds, say words, orally blend sounds into words and develop a child's ability to listen to, make, explore and talk about sounds.

Click the buttons to the right for videos showing you the level 2 and level 3 actions and sounds.

Level 1 phonics

Level 1 focuses on the recognition of individual sounds. This includes :

  • Environmental Sounds

  • Instrumental Sounds
    Body Percussion

Level 2 phonics

Level 2 focuses on recognising initial sounds and as children learn more sounds they begin to blend similar words together alongside 'tricky words' which are words that are not decodable, for example, the word 'the'.

This helps them progress in English lessons for both reading and writing.

Level 3 Phonics

Is a continuation of the skills learnt in level 2 with the introduction of new sounds that include 2 or 3 letters, as well as more tricky words. At this point, children begin to read short sentences in line with their reading books, which follow the same scheme.
