Oral Communication
We recognise that the Early Years are a crucial time for children to develop their oral communication skills and so have a number of strategies in place to help children develop their speaking and extend their vocabulary:

-
Children learn through independent play in engaging indoor and outdoor spaces that encourage communication.
-
Adults support language development by modelling vocabulary and asking thoughtful questions.
-
Children regularly share ideas with partners or small groups to build confidence in speaking.
-
We plan open‑ended questions and activities to deepen children’s thinking.
-
Talking and idea‑sharing are built into all areas of the curriculum.
-
Stories, songs, and actions help children build confidence to retell and answer questions.
-
Vocabulary is developed through modelling, explicit teaching, and practice.
-
Parents support speaking and listening at home through weekly talking homework.
