Oral Communication

We recognise that the Early Years are a crucial time for children to develop their oral communication skills  and so have a number of strategies in place to help children develop their speaking and extend their  vocabulary:

  • Children learn through independent play in engaging indoor and outdoor spaces that encourage communication.

  • Adults support language development by modelling vocabulary and asking thoughtful questions.

  • Children regularly share ideas with partners or small groups to build confidence in speaking.

  • We plan open‑ended questions and activities to deepen children’s thinking.

  • Talking and idea‑sharing are built into all areas of the curriculum.

  • Stories, songs, and actions help children build confidence to retell and answer questions.

  • Vocabulary is developed through modelling, explicit teaching, and practice.

  • Parents support speaking and listening at home through weekly talking homework.
