Maths

Early years maths focuses on building a foundation for understanding numbers, shape, space, and measure through play, exploration, and daily routines. This includes:

  • Noticing

  • Creating sets

  • Comparing

  • Subitising (the ability to instantly recognise the number of objects in a small group without counting them one by one.)

  • Composition

  • Counting

Early maths approaches encourage practitioners and children to be ‘users’ of maths; noticing, comparing, labelling and recognising patterns at all stages of curriculum learning.
